If anything is going to drive me away from computers

it's the fact that my handwriting just sucks these days.

Complain and you shall receive*

The eyebeam application converts eyemodule files to firepad (nee image viewer) files. The imgvtopgm tool converts firepad files to pgm files at which point there is the trusty convert program for making web images. Now I just need to figure out how to mail firepad images as attachments... *When I was a small boy I used to get mad some fierce when I was playing with my Lego and building a complicated model. I would need to find that one tiny connector without which the whole effort was moot. It didn't take long before I was smashing the few unfortunate pieces I could see and screaming blue murder for the guily party to stop hiding and show itself right now! Eventually I found it because, well, it was right there. Still, I never really let go of the idea that it was my screaming that had made it appear.

Jon Katz : Universal Access

Universal access [ to the Network ] is an important idea but this kind of blind-faith the ends justify the means celebration terrifies me. What are the terms of use for these things and what are the guarantees that an employee's behaviour outside of work won't be monitored and subject to review by The Corporation? Universal -- not to mention fair and equitable -- access is a big problem and big problems are usually not solved by simply making the trains run on time.

This American Life considers the practice of character assination

in American politics. I've always wanted to do a cable-access / net-show called "5 Second Character Assination" which is more commonly refered to, in polite society, as "people watching". (real evil g2)

Wired : The Medium is the Community

"Most information that people might find useful is not considered to be newsworthy, [Preecs] said, because it stretches over a longer period than the daily news cycle most of the press adheres to. He recommended using lots of volunteers working over the Internet to cover local issues and events, and delve into subjects that do not follow a daily news cycle."

It's nice to see websites acting like cigarette companies

and re-designing their packaging for seemingly no other reason than to garner attention and increaseco-called mindshare. All I know is I can't read anything because I keep getting distracted by all those foofy dots ( I struggle on in a war of attrition with one of my employers over the use of bullets ) and triangles and those lines. What is up with those lines? see also MetaFilter / Zeldman : I smell cubicle. Update : via haughey comes plain vanilla Salon, just the way we like it.

Mark A. Hershberger : Image::Grab.pm

"was born from a script. The script was born when a certain Comics Syndicate stopped having a static (or even predictable) url for their comics. I generalized the code for a friend when he needed to do something similar." It does everything : regex, passwords, cookies and referers. Cool!
