Updates may be a bit spartan this weekend
while my mother is on-Island. ( She brought
real bagels too! Yay! )
David Bornstein : Reshaping Society Through People Power
"What is different today, however, is not only the increasing number of these groups worldwide, but also the view that they are a distinct sector, one that, like government, serves essential social functions, but that has many of the entrepreneurial qualities of business. The profit, in this case, is primarily social progress." This is intriguing but I think it's important to remember that you can't, and shouldn't, abstract people into concepts like a bottom-line. It would make everyone's life *infinitely* easier it we could. Seriously. As long as you were on the right side of the line.
Department of Discretionary Data
"Another in our occasional series of fascinating data that washes up off the Internet."
Christie Blachford : This bird won't take flight
from the city
"There are always miles of highways temporarily working as mere roads and crammed with sport-utility vehicles and four-wheel drives, strip malls full of chain stores, big-box outlet joints (many of which, mysteriously, have cafes attached, as if you actually might like to linger there in the middle of the bleak and soul-destroying nowhere), unimaginably huge churches and spanking new schools, no sidewalks and, the old chicken-and-egg conundrum here, nothing worth walking to anyway."
