This looks really neat. Thanks for sharing. Have you run into any feeds that have given this app a problem? What does it do if a title is missing?

How exactly did you get this on your phone? I have a Nextel i90c which supports Java...but I need to do an over-the-air installation as I don\'t have any cables. I could not find any mention of that on the sun site.

Posted by: Jonathan Greene on October 3, 2002 10:31 PM

Comments:

I did it with Bluetooth - just file transferred straight to the phone with the Apple OSX Bluetooth File Transfer utility. I\'m told in Windows you just drag the file to the phone in "Bluetooth Neighbourhood" - and I believe you also can do it by pointing the WAP browser straight it the JAR file, but I haven\'t tried that.

ah, bluetooth... have to wait for that one to come. Nextel currently does not have any capable phones. Damn.

Is the fourth bullet necessary? Are there any such parsers? My experience has been that non-namespace aware parsers don\'t discard prefixes, instead they treat the prefix as if it were a part of the name.

I think it\'s better to constrain the future (you can\'t design a new module that uses foo:title, you can\'t use a dc:title that\'s different that your title and expect it to work right), than it is to alter the past (yes, we said that the title was {}title, but now it isn\'t). Lick of sense for the future means don\'t try to support RSS2 modules if you don\'t have the parser for it. You must rewrite old stuff in a new parser means that Shelley can\'t parse 2.0 at all, even t/d/l, until she can get a namespace aware version of PHP to install on her machine without messing everything else up.

Sooner or later the backwards compatibility is going to have to be broken, and now that namespace support has been worked into RSS, it\'s the perfect time to clean it out. Try to avoid breaking backwards compatiblity, but sometimes it has to be done, and the important thing to do is do it properly so that it will not have to happen again.
